Currently I'm in a little town called Lübeck in north western Germany, Liam and I are on a short day trip here but we're on the internet as it's Easter Sunday and everything is closed!
We started off our trip in Belgium, where walking along the street makes your mouth water as you smell and see all the chocolate displays in shop windows. Brussels is a pretty cool place, with some funky old style buildings to see, whilst still having the buzz of city life.
Having eaten a delicious dinner of Mussels in Brussels, Liam and I took a day trip to Bruge the next day. It was very pretty, and chocolate was everywhere, but it was also a town that would be dead without the tourist prescence (ie. at night). In the evening we visited a pub in Brussels (with some random Aussies/Americans we met in the hostel) which had a menu the size of a phonebook! The ceiling of this pub, which served 3000 different types of beer, was covered with trays from each of the beer companies... It was pretty cool (and the Belgium beer was good too!).
Heading on to Amsterdam from Brussels we were met with quite a different scent as we walked the streets... There was a lot to see in Amsterdam - the Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank House, Cannibus College (with a weed garden downstairs!) and no, we didn't patronise any of the 300 coffee shops scattered about... I would have liked to make a day trip to the dikes, (did you know that over 50% of the Netherlands is below sea level?) but we didn't have time unfortunately.
Meeting Liam's church friend, Emma, in Berlin we bike toured around the city and soaked in it's rich history in visiting museums, monuments, and even a concentration camp! German food is so thick and satisfying... I think Germany is a place where even I can put on weight! (oh where oh where has my almost 4-pack gone??)
From Berlin we tripped to Prague for a few days, where the food is just so so cheap (if you don't get trapped by the tourist places!). Prague is SUCH a tourist city... You just can't get away from souveineer shops if you're wandering the inner city!
Back in Germany, Hamburg, we walked about the main square and lake, and visited a fun fair in the evening. This is the city that reminds me most of Sydney - Lots of water, classy shops surrounding the main square, and the easter-show-replacement fun fair evening, which even had fireworks! There was also a fish market which we visited early early this morning before seeing Emma off (she's studying in Oslo and has to get back for exams) where we had some good good fried fish... But no prawns or oysters! :(
This evening we're heading to Copenhagen before heading to Emma's place in Oslo, from where we'll fly back to Edinburgh in time for Liam's birthday (on which I'll force him to eat Haggis) and two of my exams!
